I have heard the Betfair betting exchange explained as peer to peer betting. What does that mean?

Betfair is peer to peer betting, meaning that the bets which are listed on the exchange have been posted by other users, and not the usual middleman of a traditional bookmaker. One user can post odds for a market, and it just needs another user to match it, to make it active. This doesn’t mean that you know directly who you are betting against. You are just seeing the odds.
